Lest we think that Canadian officials have a monopoly on antisocial behavior, there's the story of Peter Watts, a Canadian author who was assaulted by U.S. border guards on Tuesday while attempting to get back into Canada from visiting friends in the United States. His crime was apparently exiting his car to ask why it was being searched; he's charged with assault on a Federal official. (There are efforts towards collecting funds for his legal defense out on the Intarwebs.)

It doesn't frighten me that Americans are divided but it does frighten me that more and more people are falling for the right-wing extremism and the fanatical religious arguments that are driving people. We need more activism and shouting in this country, not less, but we need it from liberals and leftists, not the ignorant people on the right who wave their Bibles and advocate greed and killing innocent people.

It is a frightening country to live in with the amount of division that is evident. Not a polite division but a dangerous shouting and shoving type of real unrestrained barking dog type of activism. I am sorry I even became aware of it, although I couldnt really help it as my Mom for some reason got involved in right wing logic through her interest in fundamentalist Christianity. I think much of this comes out of that mother lode although it becomes joined up with generic hooligans and wackos.

hello,nice read.
I totally agree with you on the point that Amerika should no more look for coutries to invade. That foreign strategy
has failed in making USA the most pwerful country of the world, which was its first aim. I have voted to Obama and I hope that he and his administration can spread peace not war.About Palestinians the last Gaza war was really horrible, the civilians in Gaza have really suffered aa lot in the last monthes and the photos in freegaza 'site confirm that. So let's stop treating them as terrorists who deserve to be punished.

You know anything is better than Norm Coleman, the guy needs braces man, his jaw is so outta place.

On the secretary of state, I think it's a good idea Hillary was that, I personally think if it wasnt for her or her estranged husband (I know they don't sleep in the same bed) Bill, who I do have alotta respect for, Obama may not have won Florida, a very important key battleground state that Clintons campaigned in heavily...so Obama kinda owes her for that, it will make Obama stronger as well if she was secretary of state and I think she is gonna get it.

John Kerry can have some place in the cabinet but for what? He can make a good senator but a shit presidential candidate.

If Obama accomplishes in getting you guys out of this economic mess, then say hello to a 2nd term in 2012! I want him to be just as successful as Franklin Roosevelt, so far he's my favourite President of all time, if Obama can do it then he's on the same level as FDR.

Anyways Bush is out in like 60 days, PARTY ON MAN!!!....I would throw a leavers suprise party for him. He's so worried about what he's going to do now that he won't have a job anymore lololol. He should be a Presidential limo driver for Obama, it's a start. Dick Cheney can be the baggage handler lol, god I hate that son of a bitch of a vice president...he really freaks me out, I am so serious, he's one scary dude!

@Metaphysics: All day today the Republicans were talking about how to repair their party -- it won't happen! Then one of their giant goons shoved Sarah Palin aside and didn't let her finish her press conference at the governor's meeting, which made me feel kind of sorry for her. hahahaha
Seriously, I also want Franken to win at this point. He filed a lawsuit today to look at ballots that have been tossed out. It's going to get ugly here. I would love Coleman to be defeated by a comedian, (Franken is also a great author and movie scriptwriter, did you know that?) but keep in mind that Coleman is the sleaziest comedian of all.
There are rumors that Coleman's people have already done a lot to steal the vote.

I hope Obama lives up to everyone's expectations. It will be difficult, but if he even accomplishes half of what people want him to do it will be an ENORMOUS improvement, if he would only keep the war hawks out of his cabinet. He's relying too much on people who want to keep us at war.

And I swear this is unrelated to that but Hillary Clinton is now on another "short list" to be our Secretary of State. That job had been rumored to be going to John Kerry.

OBAMA!!!! He's gonna bring the troops home and end Iraq...I am just so happy, the Republican reign is over! The are so shamrocked by defeat they are ALREADY talking about 2012 and who will lead thier party, it's only been 12 days Obama's been elected. I tell you this, if Obama is successful, the Republicans have no chance of a comeback!

@glenn sibley: Good to hear! We also had paper ballots, but I noticed at for the first time ever they gave us ball point pens. According to Blackboxvoting.org ball point pen ink can easily be lifted off using certain chemicals, without leaving a mark. Before we were always given felt-tip markers which are more permanent, so I hope that's nothing to worry about.

Shelly I just wanted to let you know from the chilly state of New Hampshire that I was able to vote with in ten minutes of showing up to vote. Fast moving lines and no problem as far as I could tell. We here in this state use paper ballots so there is very little chance of things going wrong. I wish all of the country used the same machines that way we could all vote with out feeling our votes might be stolen.

I just listened to your last podcast with the interview with the candidate from the Socialist Workers' Party, and I felt the need to correct one of the misstatements she made regarding Obama's alleged changes to Medicare. She made the statement that he admitted that he would cut Medicare. Not true. What he has said is that he would get rid of the 15 billion dollar payment to the heath insurance companies which they receive as a result of the prescription drug legislation.

Also - Glenn, as for your question of what you can do when Sarah Palin comes to town? I would just show up with a sign and yell at her, she gets rattled pretty easily and doesn't like hecklers. As far as I know, yelling at her isn't against the law.
If she gets rattled and off message it'll be on TV somewhere. Can you get a bunch of people together and just yell/ heckle her speech? That's actually pretty effective because she's not used to it and she isn't able to ignore it.

Glenn, I agree our goal should be to keep Republicans out of office. What you can do is write on blogs, comment all over online, comment on Youtube, comment on Digg, write your own blog, talk to as many people as you can. I will also have some ideas of what to do next week -- I recently got the audio of a documentary about how Republicans steal votes and steal elections, called "Hacking Democracy" that I will be putting out parts of in a podcast. Plan to be a poll worker and then videotape the poll tapes in your precinct. I'll talk about this in an election related podcast.
I don't want to get into who votes for who, it's more important that our votes count. They are planning on stealing this election again, and we have to stop them.

Sorry, Meta, your video link didn't show up.
I've revised this answer a little....because it's true that Obama is our best firewall against McCain at this point. My biggest worry is that the election will be stolen. But I'm personally not going to actively campaign for someone I don't believe in just because he's a firewall, even if I do end up voting for him. I'm far more liberal than Obama and I disagree with him on some huge issues, like the FISA compromise, which legalizes and condones spying on Americans without a warrant, and his support for retroactive criminal immunity, an issue that is enormous. We are already living in a police state and he helped make it worse. He also voted for the bailout bill, a giveaway to corporatations and Wall Street to the impoverishment of average Americans.

Obama, Biden, and McCain are all for "Clean coal". Believing that "clean coal" even exists is ridiculous, it doesn't exist in any way. It's like flying cars, it's a dream of the future but it's not real. Coal is the most polluting form of energy on earth and Obama and Biden are for it, so no, I can't campaign for that. The Green Party is the party of the future and I hope and wish everyone will check them out. both inside the US and in the UK, etc.

Coal needs to stop being used tomorrow. We have no time to lose on stopping carbon emissions. We have other bridges of energy we can use, and we are already using them. The southern part of MN and SD are full of wind farms. We need them all over the country. And I'd rather we used nuclear power than coal. At least Obama is for nuclear power and I hope someone can talk him into stopping the promotion of coal.

So Obama would need to be more liberal on the issues before I would actually campaign for him. Still, of the two men, if it is close in the polls in my state, I will easily support Obama over John McCain, who is a Neocon fascist and will destroy what little is left of this country. At least I know Obama would not deliberately destroy the foundation of what we have left here. If the polls are close here I will do what I can with my vote to NOT let John McCain win this state.

I got a blog going called politriks... http://politriks.wordpress.com/

I am against Obama on the spying issue but I agree with him 90% of the time lol.

Obama may want to use clean coal technology but thing is to transfer from oil to alternative sources is a big one, you cannot expect it to happen overnight, so all you can rely on is what you've got in producing energy and keeping up with demand.

Obama has proposed a policy in spending 15 billion a year in investing in renewable sources of energy, such as wind, solar and hydrogen...so they are no longer dependent on foreign oil, it's a big start. However we all know McCain isn't for it, he voted numerous times against it, so I know I won't side with this fucking douce bag.

To be honest, outa the 2 candidates who are likely to be President he really gives a shit about climate change and investment in alternative energy. It's better than nothing I can tell you that.

My mum votes for the Green Party here in the UK, however I agree with thier stances on the environment but I feel the party is too reductionist in it's policies. The environment is the fundamental foundation in thier party and really that can be seen as part of an issue important, but not a wholesome important one...I do think there are far more important policies that have a greater significance. At the moment 69% are concerned about the economy rather than the Iraq War or the environment.

Damn Minnesota is a battleground state, I urge you to campaign for Obama if you can please! I am outside the US Embassy in London, it's bloody working!!!

Please vote for Obama. He has the best plan to move move forward. He is not perfect, far from it and our whole system is in a current melt down. If you vote for someone other than Obama I feel you are giving a vote to McCain. We can not have McCain in office. Our main goal should be to keep republicans out of office. Way 2 old, way 2 grumpy, and way 2 wrong on every point. Sarah Pallin is coming to my town next week. Shellious do you have any thoughts on what I should do, within the law of corse. Dress up like the devil, Streaking, I don't know help me out. Maybe a sign that says Pallin another Bush we can't trust.

McCain's proposal to buy out some of the mortgages is already part of the bailout bill, and Obama already came out in support of it, so as usual McCain doesn't know what's going on, he just wants to take credit for it.
Never underestimate the stupid things that make Americans vote for Republicans like McCain though. He is launching new attacks today that are full of lies and some people just won't care that Obama is better than McCain on every issue. But Obama still is for some things I have real problems with. (spying, "clean coal" and some other things)

This country really needs the Green Party but I don't think the U.S. is ready for the huge changes the GP stands for until maybe after someone like Obama makes a bridge from the past to how things will have to be in the future. I don't think people understand yet how climate change is going to change everything. Coal is out. So is drilling for oil. Both Obama and McCain want to use more coal and more oil. That's just not going to work. Anyway, McCain is dangerous and we need to keep him out of office. I'll be voting against him, so ....it depends on the polls here in my state on election day. If Obama is safely way ahead I might not feel like he needs my vote as much as McKinney.

All I can say is....McCain's explanation to save the economy...buy more of the bad loans in the market, so basically a bailout ontop of the existing bailout!

Obama/Biden have won all 3 debates.....so all I need to do is sit back and see victory prevail, McCain is toast!

Are you voting for Obama or the Green Party?
